Help and Support Crossing the Nullarbor

Help can be a long way away on the Nullarbor. Whether it's a Centrelink problem, a health worry, car trouble or something more serious, this page lists the offices, health services and phone lines along the Eyre Highway, from Kalgoorlie and Esperance in the west to Port Augusta in the east. Save the numbers in your phone before you leave — there are long stretches with no signal.

In an emergency, call 000 (police, ambulance, fire). A 000 call from a mobile uses any available network. See phone coverage and emergencies for what to do where there's no signal at all.

Centrelink and Services Australia along the route

There are three kinds of Services Australia offices along the way:

At agents and access points you can also upload documents and have identity documents checked. Their staff don't work for Services Australia, though, so they can't make decisions about payments or lodge a claim for you.

Centrelink phone lines

Across the Plain itself, the phone is your Centrelink office. Call the line for your payment:

You can also manage most things yourself through your Centrelink online account in myGov or the Express Plus Centrelink app. Do it while you have signal.

Stuck without money? If you already get a Centrelink payment and something unexpected has left you in severe financial hardship, ask about an urgent payment. It's an early payment of your own entitlement, not extra money, so your next payment is lower. Call your payment's line, or ask to speak to a social worker on 132 850.

Help for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Several of the Services Australia sites along the route are in Aboriginal communities. The Yalata agent sits just off the highway east of Nullarbor Roadhouse. There's an access point at Scotdesco on the Eyre Highway at Bookabie, and an agent at Koonibba, north-west of Ceduna. Further north, well away from the highway, there are also agents at Oak Valley and Tjuntjuntjara. These are community-run services that mainly serve local people.

Car trouble

If you're a member of a motoring club (RAC, RAA, NRMA, RACV and the like), the roadside number is on your membership card and in the club's app. Before you go, ask your club how far a tow is covered: on the Nullarbor the nearest mechanic can be hundreds of kilometres away. For what to do if you break down, see phone coverage and emergencies.

Help and support: common questions

Can I get an urgent Centrelink payment if I'm stuck on the Nullarbor?
