The 90 Mile Straight

Between Balladonia and Caiguna the Eyre Highway runs dead straight for 146.6 kilometres — 91 miles — without a single turn. The “90 Mile Straight” is regarded as the longest straight stretch of road in Australia, and one of the longest in the world.

Where it is

The straight is part of the 182-kilometre leg between Balladonia and Caiguna, in Western Australia. Balladonia is 191 kilometres east of Norseman. There is no fuel between Balladonia and Caiguna, so fill up at one end before you start — see the fuel stops and distances table.

Driving it safely

• Fatigue is the real danger. Hour after hour of straight, flat road is hard on concentration. Stop and rest before you feel tired, and share the driving if you can.
• Watch for wildlife. Kangaroos, emus, camels and stock cross the road, especially around dawn and dusk. Avoid driving at night.
• Give road trains room. Long, heavy vehicles use the Eyre Highway all the time. Only overtake where you can see well ahead — which, here, is a long way.
• Look out for the airstrips. Some widened sections of the Eyre Highway are Royal Flying Doctor Service emergency airstrips, with runway markings painted on the road.
